NewsNo news posted COMMUNITY CLEAN UPAn Amazing 160 Glassbrook Neighbors, Americorp Volunteers and Kids Breakfast Club Volunteers honored the life of Cesar Chavez by cleaning our neighborhood on Saturday March 10. We made 5-6 miles of Hayward Streets shine! In addition to the streets we regularly clean once each month (Huntwood from Gading to Harris, Schafer, Gading, Patrick, Belvedere & Parts of Manon, Tyrrell and Shepherd), thanks to the great turnout we were able to add: Harder from Jane down to Santa Clara; Cypress from Harder almost to Jackson and Parts of Tennyson. Principal Ruben Pulido for his tireless efforts rallying families! Councilman Mark Salinas for providing another fantastic breakfast of premium scrambled eggs, French toast and strawberries! Sabrina Aranda and the whole Americorp Team for excellent organization and turnout! Americorp and Glassbrook Families cleaned out the Glassbrook Garden of last year’s growth and painted the garden boxes in time for spring planting! Rosalva Ruiz and Maria Radilla for handling litter grabber checkout. Blytha Bowers and Keep Hayward Clean & Green Task force for your excellent work throughout the City. Todd Rullman, city truck driver Jerry, and the Hayward Streets Department for outstanding, fast service in hauling away so much debris! Special Thanks are also in order to the Tyrrell Neighborhood Association which has been cleaning Manon, Tyrrell and Shepherd very regularly –things are much better and your team deserves lots of credit! Thank you TNA for your great service to our neighborhood! Principal's MessageDear Parents and Guardians of Glassbrook Elementary School, To all recent arrivals to Glassbrook School, Welcome! And to all parents that joined us at the beginning of the school year, we thank you for your support thus far. We have arrived at the mid-way point of our school year. Our staff continues to look forward to working in partnership with you to maximize student achievement, improve our school API / STAR scores, and to provide a safe and positive learning environment. Teachers have been implementing all School Board and District-approved instructional materials. Teachers have worked hard to stay on pace with our defined instruction and assessment calendars. Teachers monitor student performance on a daily basis and meet, monthly, with me to discuss student academic performance. Our Site Based Decision-making Team (SBDM) has assisted in the development of several key school elements including our Emergency Preparedness Plan, School-wide Discipline Plan, Code of Conduct Handbook, and many school-wide academic competition events. The SBDM Team focuses on planning and implementation of successful school procedures and processes. We implemented several supplemental instruction programs to help our students succeed academically. Our Youth Enrichment Program (YEP) hosts over one hundred students daily. Our Supplemental Education Service providers (SES) provide instructional services during our extended-day Saturday program. Additionally, many teachers host specific intervention program and coordinate assistance from para-educators for identified students on a daily basis. Several committees exist to ensure our parent voice is heard including our School Site Council (SSC), English Language Advisory (ELAC), and Parent Teacher Organization Committees. These committees have been meeting weekly and/or on a monthly basis to share in the decision-making process. Our SSC and ELAC committees have played an integral role in helping us establish our Single Plan for Student Achievement and use of our categorical funds. Our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) meets on a weekly basis to provide training in collaboration with our AmeriCorps Liaison. This year’s focus has been to provided nutrition, family, and health education training. A Special thanks to AmeriCorps, we are only one of two schools that receive healthy snacks four times weekly for 100% of our students. Our student’s voice is also held with high regard. Glassbrook School plays host to a successful Student Council that meets, minimally, once monthly. The Student Council organized and held a successful food donation drive that served 30 families, a winter toy drive in collaboration with a local motorcycle group that served 170 children. The Student Council plans to host the Peace March and will support upcoming school-wide academic competitions. Glassbrook’s Community Service record is outstanding. Once monthly, we work with our community leader, Mr. Galati, to coordinate our monthly clean-up events. These events start with a breakfast hosted by Hayward’s Breakfast Kids Club and Executive Director, Councilman Mark Salinas. Approximately, 175 breakfasts are served prior to an event that yields clean-up of one ton of debris from four miles of streets around our school community. These and many other activities and events make Glassbrook School an exciting place to learn. We look forward to our continued work together. Sincerely, Ruben H. Pulido, Principal TDAP-WHOOPING COUGH IMMUNIZATION INFORMATIONThe California State Department of Health now requires all students entering the 7th grade to be immunized against Whooping Cough before starting the 2012-2013 school year. 6th grade students going into the 7th grade will not be able to enroll without verification of the immunization. Children should visit their doctor or health care provider to get their shots. Children 18 years and under who are uninsured or underinsured may qualify for the Vaccines for Children Program.
